The Problem with Conventional Contrast Agents
The Unseen Risks of Retention
Traditional MRI contrast agents rely on gadolinium ions bound within molecular cages.
GBCAs are generally considered extremely stable, based on their thermodynamic stability constants. Without getting too technical, Inventure’s research shows that there is an equilibrium that exists between weak and strong cages. Weak cages are more prone to releasing gadolinium after injection, which can lead to trace amounts depositing in tissues. While, “strong cages” keep the gadolinium securely bound, allowing nearly all of the agent to be cleared by the kidneys within about 12 hours in individuals with normal kidney function.
Over time, certain molecular cages can be challenged upon injection, allowing small amounts of gadolinium to escape and accumulate in the brain, bones, and organs—especially with repeat imaging. Regulators around the world have responded with new guidance and restrictions, highlighting the urgent need for a safer alternative that doesn’t compromise diagnostic performance.
